To use any of our adaptors with a Gen1 UMC, whether Standard or Compact, you will need the Tesla 16A red UMC adaptor, pictured on the right. This adaptor is not normally supplied as part of the kit with the car and if you do not have it, you will need to purchase it separately. More details can be found here.
The Gen3 UMC comes fitted with the 16A red CEE Commando plug.
Once you have the Tesla 16A red UMC adaptor, you have two ranges of adaptors to choose from: the “Standard Red” range and the “Compact Red” range.
Both ranges allow for the full three-phase power at 16A / 11kW so there is no difference in charging speed. The key benefits the Compact system has to offer are size, waterproofness, ease of use and cross-compatibility with Gen2 UMC (with the Compact Blue UMC adaptor).
Gen1 / Gen3 Adaptors by country
Blue countries – Schuko sockets
Found in most European countries.
These countries use the standard Schuko socket with earth contacts at the top and bottom.
When charging in these countries with a Gen1 UMC, if upon plugging in, the UMC flashes red, it could be because of a Live and Neutral inversion (the UMC is sensitive to this). If this happens, simply unplug the adaptor, rotate it 180 degrees and plug it back into the socket.
Red countries – French sockets
France, Corsica, Belgium, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
These countries use a modified French (Type E) socket where the earth connection is a pin protruding off-centre, at the top of the socket. As the Gen1 UMC is sensitive to Live and Neutral connectivity, if the socket is wired “the wrong way”, unlike a Schuko, you cannot rotate the plug around 180 degrees as it only has a hole for the earth on one side.
Should you plug your Gen1 UMC in with a Schuko adaptor and find it flashes red, you need the Standard Universal Phase Inversion adaptor which swaps the Live and Neutral wires allowing you to charge.
There is also a legay three-phase socket in France called the “Plexo” adaptor. As this is rated at 20A, if you have one available, then it’s a great one to use as the circuit should be more than capable of sustaining 16A over all three phases.
- Standard Red Schuko adaptor£40.00Schuko plug for use across continental Europe. Note that for France, the additional phase inversion adaptor might be required.
- Standard Red 20A Three-phase Plexo adaptor£40.00Standard 20A 3-phase Plexo adaptor for use in France.
- Standard Red Universal Phase Inversion adaptor£40.00Single-phase inversion adaptor. Use only with the Standard Red Schuko or 16A single-phase blue adaptors!
Blue / Cyan – Italy
Covering Italy and Sardinia
In Italy, you can use the Schuko adaptor in the “Bipasso” sockets commonly found which are like a Schuko socket but also have a centre hole for earth. These are commonly found across the country, and in this case, you can use the Schuko adaptor mentioned previously.
There might be occasions however when the Bipasso sockets aren’t available in which case you’ll need dedicated Italian plug adaptors because whilst the Schuko would plug into it, there won’t be an earth connection.
Two different sizes exist: a 10A and a 16A plug (technical designation is CEI 23-50 S11 and CEI 23-50 S17 respectively). The 16A version has the pins spaced further apart than the 10A version where the pitch is identical to the Schuko plug.
If you find your UMC flashes red when you plug in, try unplugging, rotating the plug around 180 degrees and reinserting it into the socket. As you can do this with the Italian sockets, you do not need the Universal Phase Inversion adaptor.
Pink – Switzerland
Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
The Swiss also have their own type of plugs which are slightly different. 16A and 10A versions exist, each in both single phase and three-phase variants. Their plugs and sockets are a rather elegant solution in that you can plug in a lower-powered plug into a higher-powered socket (but not the other way around).
In ascending order of power, there is:
- SEV Type 12 – 10A 3-pin round – 2.3kW
- SEV Type 23 – 16A 3-pin square – 3.7kW
- SEV Type 15 – 10A 5-pin round 3-phase – 7kW
- SEV Type 25 – 16A 5-pin square 3-phase – 11kW
- Standard Red 10A 3-phase Swiss adaptor£40.00Standard 10A three-phase Swiss adaptor (SN SEV 1011 Type 15) for use in Switzerland.
- Standard Red 10A Swiss adaptor£40.00Standard 10A Swiss adaptor (SN SEV 1011 Type 13) for use in Switzerland. Charge current must be limited to no more than 10A.
- Standard Red 16A 3-phase Swiss adaptor£40.00Standard 16A three-phase Swiss adaptor (SN SEV 1011 Type 25) for use in Switzerland.
- Standard Red 16A Swiss adaptor£40.00Standard 16A Swiss adaptor (SN SEV 1011 Type 23) for use in Switzerland.
Green – Denmark
The Danish standard socket is similar to the French one with the earth offset, however, the socket has a hole for it instead of the protruding pin found on the French version.
In addition to the standard two-pin Danish socket, there is also a 16A three-phase version for which we also have an adaptor.
Orange – UK and ROI
Adaptors for the ubiquitous UK 13A 3-pin plug.
There are a couple of scenarios where you might want to use this adaptor instead of the Tesla-supplied one. If you have some of our standard three-phase extension leads, then you can use them with the adaptor. It also allows you to increase the charge current from the 10A maximum via the Tesla adaptor to 12 or 13A if you’re sure the circuit is well designed and can handle the load. Please remember to dial down from 16A or you will blow the fitted 13A fuse.
As well as a single plug adaptor, we also have a 4-gang socket which can be useful when used in conjunction with our extension leads. In this case, the 4-gang socket adaptor plugs into the end of the 3-pin plug adaptor (or extension lead). You could then use the Tesla-supplied 13A plug adaptor to charge your car at 10A leaving a few amps available for other low-powered devices such as laptops and mobile phone chargers.
Industrial adaptors
In addition to the various domestic sockets and corresponding adaptors you will find across Europe, there are also a range of industrial CEE / Commando sockets found on various sites ranging from factories to marinas and camping sites:
- 32A 3-phase Red CEE / Commando: with the 32A to 16A, you can charge at 11kW, the maximum the Gen1 UMC will allow.
- 16A single-phase Blue CEE / Commando: found on camping sites and marinas. Please be aware that some camping sites don’t have that much power available so you might have to dial down the current to a lower value. Whist there is a standard for the wiring, it has been known for some French camping sites to have the Live and Neutral connections reversed in which case you will need the Standard Universal Phase Inversion adaptor listed previously.
CEE Commando 3-phase Extenson Leads
With these extension leads supporting the full 16A 3-phase / 11kW levels of power, you can extend the reach should you not be able to have your vehicle parked near enough to the power outlet for the length of the UMC cable to reach.
Various extension leads can be daisy-chained if required, but please remember these are IP44 splashproof only and so you should ensure they cannot be submerged in water. The Compact system doesn’t suffer from this.
Also, you should keep total cable length to a minimum so do not use an extension lead unless it is required in order to minimise voltage drop and reduced charge speeds.

Compact Red UMC adaptor
In order to be able to use our Compact range of adaptors and extension leads with a Gen1 or Gen3 UMC, you need the Compact Red UMC adaptor to convert from our Compact connector back to the 16A red three-phase CEE Commando socket so that it can be plugged into the Tesla 16A red UMC plug.

- 16A 3-phase Red CEE / Commando: what the UMC uses. With this adaptor, you can extend the reach with our Compact extension leads.
- 32A single-phase Blue CEE / Commando: also used by the UMC for up to 7kW single-phase charging. We can provide a “Compact 32A pair” set of adaptors that allow you to use our Compact extension leads to provide 32A / 7kW power to your car. These adaptors must only be used in conjunction with the Tesla 32A Blue UMC adaptor due to non-standard wiring.
- 16A single-phase Blue CEE / Commando: found on camping sites and marinas. Please be aware that some camping sites don’t have that much power available so you might have to dial down the current to a lower value.

Compact Red Extension leads
You can use our Compact Red extension leads to increase the available reach from the power outlet to your vehicle. Unlike the Standard Red 3-phase Extension leads, these are fully waterproof and can be left in the rain without fear of them ending up in a deep water puddle.
The Compact Blue extension leads will also work with all our Compact adaptors, but they only support single-phase power. Using them with a three-phase source is fine and perfectly safe, but only one phase will be carried through to the car.
